I like to have a thread like this in any forum im active in. As a place to share my thoughts, and get ideas from other people. So i hijacked some of my old post from DA boards... and i do need to update it sometime.. but here is a start.

1. Song of Ice and Fire .. George RR Martin.. --These books are a great read for someone who enjoys background and political intrigue. The characters are complex, and the plot is even more complex. Not for the casual reader. but if you have the time this series is an absolute must

2. Sword of Truth.. Terry Goodkind -- What a great series filled with ups and downs, but an over all excelent plot and character development. This is my personal favorite series. I Just cant wait for the next book..

3. R.A Salvatore--What a great and easy read Salvatore's work is. His characters are simple, and yet very likeable. i seem to devour his books at an astonishing pace. come one everyone knows of the famous drow ranger, how many variations of his name drizzt have you seen in eq. ... ha like im one to talk ... belgarrin isnt exactly originial.

4. speaking of which The Malloreon and The Belgariad by David Eddings are also great series of very easy reading, with unforgetable characters and fun fighting. I loved how he emphisied the battles tactics with calavery, archers, pikeman, and such.

5. The Shannara series..Terry Brooks.--Wow anyone else like to read about druids, weponmasters, elves, dwarfs, rock trolls, Terry puts together a fantastic series. I myself enjoyed the earlier books such as sword of shanara and elfstones more than the isle witch series and the voyages of jerel shanara.

6. Drenai Tales..David Gemmell.. I just read these this past summer.. What a great find these books were. David Gemmell does a wonderful job ataching you to a character, and then filling in that characters background in future books. Druss the Legend anyone.. Waylander. The Thirty. Great books and an even greater series. Waylander has to be one of my favorite characters of this series and of any series for that matter.

7. Wheel of time..Robert Jordan. Well since this series has been brought up ill adress it. First let me say i throughly enjoyed the firt 3 or 4 books. That being said this is the first series of books that i have refused to continue buying. Not because each book is so bad, but its so hard to keep up with everything unless you reread the series. also U can read an entire book and hardley any progression has taken place. just what each grp of people were doing in a given time frame. I do intend to finish this series, but ill do so after the series is finished.

8. Deeds Of Paksenarion. If you are looking for a trilogy to pick up in one volume this one is for you. It follows the trail of a simple farm girl through her adventures with the mercenary army, to even bigger and brighter things. very enjoyable and well worth the time.

9. Robin Hobb. Farseer Triliogy, Mad Ship Triliogy, and Tawney man Triliogy. I should have put this up some. not that im folowing any specific order. Robin Hobb does a fantastic job in her books. Fitz is an awsome character, but he is overshadowed by another character in the tawney man. i dont want to give anything away. but what a great way to create a world of fantasy. I was a little scepitical when i started this series but i was very suprised at its depth, and how much i liked it.

10. Rift War Saga ..Raymond Feist...--- This is a pretty good series. It produces some very likable characters, the only con is im not a big fan of characters that get overly powerful. its just a bit much for me. but it is enjoyable read and if you like that sort of thing then check it out.

11. Harry Potter... yes i broke down and read them.. i told myself forever that i wouldnt but Ninil let me borrow the entire series....let me say i read them so fast im still not sure if i didnt skip a book or four.... seriously. i enjoyed them greatly. They are what they are. they are harry potter and his adventures.. not the epic fantasy of some series but for a kids series its fantastic.

12. The Axis Triology by Sarah Douglass-- Not a bad Series, if your looking for one to pass the time. there are some intersting races and magik in this series. I like the first book the most again because .. well i dont want to give anything away... we need a forum to discuss bookis indepth such as a spoiler forum where we can give away plots and such.

13. The book of Malazan by Steven Erickson. ill add more later but great series...

well ill add more series later my time is up for now. i have many more ill add to this as i get time

Dragonlance is really the only fantasy series I ever got into. I read the first 2 Wheel of Time books but for some reason I never looked into getting the 3rd + books, even though I enjoyed the first 2.

the only way to read wheel of time is all at once.. if u try to space them out you will get lost.... so pick up the entire series.. and start... its not the best but its entertaining...

good luck waiting for the wheel of time series to be finished...Robert Jordan is dead. R.A. Salvatore has a new series out that's really good. The forst one is The Orc King, followed by The Pirate King.

Mages do it till they're OOM.

Jordan, since he knew he was dying, wrote a bunch of notes on how he wanted the books to tie together and end ... some other author is writing it now i think.

I am not much for fantasy fiction, but I will say that I thoroughly enjoyed reading the Song of Fire and Ice and Sword of Truth series. Both are extremely good, although you need to have some level of dedication to get through SoT(10k pages~ over 11 books) or be a fairly fast reader like me.

I have also read Harry Potter and think that it is very good, especially for its intended audience. Anything that promotes reading in kids gets my vote, because the thought of another wave of "wtf diaf u noob" kiddies makes me cry.

In other genres

Action/Adventure Authors

1: Clive Cussler's Dirk Pitt novels. The earlier ones (up to when his son started co-writing) are fairly good.

2: James Rollins. Most of this guys novels are pretty good. They are more sci-fi/adventure, usually containing some historical tie in.

3: Jack Du Brul. In the same vein as Cussler, central character that has multiple books.

4: Matthew Reilly. Character development is not this guys strong point, but unlike most authors he isn't afraid to kill off the good guys. He is on the extreme non-stop action end of the spectrum.
--------------------
I also recently picked up a compilation of Jules Verne stories containing

1: 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea
2: Mysterious Island
3: Around the World in 80 days
4: Journey to the Center of the Earth

and I am continually amazed at how good they are. You have to be able to put up with a descriptive writing style to read him, but it is well worth it.
----------
Early Stephen King is pretty good, "It" is probably my favorite of his books. Another author with a descriptive style(you are gonna get a page describing even the simplest things).
